Please make plans to join us and embrace your Johnson County Musical Heritage on Saturday, September 26th starting at 10am on the corner of Church and Main Streets for the unveiling of the 2nd “Musical Heritage Murals”, featuring Banman Grayson and Tom Dooley (by local renowned artist, Cristy Dunn), with a Musical Heritage tour around Johnson County that includes live musical performances at significant homesteads, farms, and locations.
10am: Musical Heritage Unveiling- Corner of Church & Main Streets
10:20am: Refreshments and Art exhibit at the Johnson County Library. Folks can pick up tour brochures either at the unveiling or at the Library
11:00am- 5:00pm Musical Heritage Tour Begins. Following is an overview of Tour Sites:
1.)The Tom Dula (Tom Dooley) capture site in the Pandora area of the county, where live performers will showcase the murder ballads so prevalent in mountain music, and which will of course include the song made famous by the Kingston Trio, “Hang Down Your Head Tom Dooley”.
2.)The gravesite of GB Grayson, the Johnson County musician who first recorded the Ballad of Tom Dooley- years before the Kingston Trio. At the gravesite, acapella singers [dressed in old time clothing] will perform gospel songs.
3.) The home place of Tom Ashley, where the folks will enjoy claw-hammer banjo picking.
4.)The farm of “Clint Howard”, who entertained tens of thousands over his lifetime, with his superb talent for picking, story-telling, songwriting, and signing.
5.)The “Fred Price” home-place where everyone will enjoy a music jam with apple butter biscuits, coffee, and a museum of historical memorabilia
